US senator says Trump would ‘kill’ Iran’s supreme leader if protest crackdown continues

US Senator Lindsey Graham cautioned that President Donald Trump would "eliminate" Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, should they persist in their crackdown on demonstrators in Iran who are seeking a better quality of life.

"To the Ayatollahs: you must comprehend—if you continue to kill your citizens who are advocating for a better existence—Donald J. Trump will take action against you," Graham stated during an interview with Fox News on Tuesday.

Graham asserted that "transformation is imminent in Iran," characterizing it as the most significant change "in the history of the Middle East to dismantle this Nazi regime."

"To the Iranian populace, assistance is forthcoming," the senator remarked.

Iran has experienced extensive protests in recent weeks due to a declining economy and the swift devaluation of the rial, which has surpassed 1,350,000 against the US dollar.

There have also been reports of violence, with several fatalities, including those of both protesters and police officers across various cities.

The senator's warning follows Khamenei's acknowledgment that the demands of the protesters are legitimate, yet he stated that rioting would not be accepted.

The government has conducted multiple rounds of discussions with shopkeeper representatives in an attempt to resolve the situation, which has escalated particularly in the capital, Tehran.

Trump indicated that Washington would "intervene" on behalf of the protesters if Tehran resorts to lethal measures against them, a statement that provoked strong reactions from senior Iranian officials.
