A Turkish Airlines pilot collapses and dies during flight, forcing the airline to make an emergency landing in New York, Turkish Airlines said on Wednesday.
The plane took off from Seattle, a coastal city in the western US, on the evening of October 8, airline spokesman Yahya Üstün wrote to X.
"The pilot of the Airbus 350... flight TK204 from Seattle to Istanbul collapsed during flight," he wrote.
"After failed attempts at first aid, the other pilot and the co-pilot crew decided to make an emergency landing, but he died before landing," he added.
The 59-year-old pilot, who had worked for Turkish Airlines since 2007, passed a medical examination he took in March that showed no signs of health problems, Üstün wrote.
Üstün offered condolences in a statement on behalf of the company, saying, "We pray for the captain's eternal peace and patience, his grieving family, and all his colleagues and loved ones."
