Laos fortifies security for upcoming Asean Summits

The 44th and 45th ASEAN summits will be held in Vientiane from Tuesday (October 8) to October 11

Laos government is beefing up security for the upcoming ASEAN Summit. The capital city Vientiane is being covered in security blankets to ensure the safety of leaders of member countries as well as representatives of various organizations. This news has been given in the local media reports.

The 44th and 45th ASEAN summits will be held in Vientiane from Tuesday (October 8) to October 11, with the theme 'ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience'. Laos authorities are making extensive preparations to welcome the leaders and delegates participating in the conference.

According to a report by Vietnam News Agency, Vientiane Traffic Police Department Chief Sankhom Phommlath released a plan on traffic management. Under the plan, more than 700 officers are being deployed at more than 200 checkpoints to ensure safe and smooth movement of senior leaders of member countries and representatives of various countries and international organizations attending the conference.

Lao Prime Minister Sonxe Siphandon also called on all government officials, members of the military, public security officials and citizens to actively fulfill their respective responsibilities, roles and duties to ensure the success of the conference.

About 2,000 delegates from Laos and other countries and about 1,000 journalists are expected to attend the conference. The conference will be attended by heads of state and government of ASEAN member countries, dialogue partner countries as well as representatives of regional and international organizations.

It is believed that Myanmar's civil war will be the most important issue in this conference. Before the conference, an important discussion was held in Jakarta, the country's capital, on the initiative of Indonesia this week.

Members of Indonesia, ASEAN, the European Union, the United Nations and members of Myanmar's anti-junta groups participated in the talks last Friday and Saturday (October 4 and 5). Myanmar, a member of ASEAN, has taken several diplomatic initiatives to resolve its crisis. But very little progress has been made.

Myanmar's military leaders have been barred by ASEAN from attending high-level meetings with Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines calling for tougher action against the junta. But Thailand has held bilateral talks with Myanmar generals and jailed pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
