UK backs India demand for permanent seat in UNSC |
India has gone a step forward in getting a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. After the United States and France, this time the United Kingdom has supported India's demand. NDTV reported.
The Security Council needs to be more representative, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said during the general debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday (September 26).
He also said, 'We want the council to include permanent members from Africa. Besides, Brazil, India, Japan and Germany should also be made permanent members. It is also necessary to increase the number of seats for elected members.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden and France's Emmanuel Macron have expressed their position in favor of India. Last Wednesday (September 25), Macron strongly argued for India's permanent membership in the UN Security Council.
As long as the door of the Security Council remains closed, we will face obstacles in moving forward, he said. Therefore, to make the UN more effective, it must be made more inclusive.
During a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his home in Wilmington, Delaware last week, Biden said the United States supports India's inclusion as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
Currently, the Security Council has five permanent members and 10 non-permanent member states. Temporary members are elected for two-year terms from their respective regions. Permanent members are USA, UK, France, Russia and China. Permanent member states have veto power.
India has been demanding permanent membership in the UN Security Council for a long time. Recently, this demand has become stronger. The country says the 15-member council, established in 1945, is not fit for purpose in the 21st century and does not reflect contemporary geopolitical realities.
