1.6 million euros passed through Bulgaria to fund pagers attack in Lebanon: Report

Thousands of pagers used by Hezbollah exploded this week

1.6 million euros had flowed into Hungary via Bulgaria in connection with the deadly pager attack in Lebanon. Reuters reported citing Bulgarian broadcaster bTV.

bTV reported on Thursday (19 September) citing a source in the National Security Service. Bulgarian authorities said Thursday that the Interior Ministry and the National Security Service had opened an investigation into  possible corporate links.

They did not name the companies they were investigating. Local media reports said Sofia-based company Norta Global  facilitated the sale of  pagers to Hezbollah.

Hundreds of pagers belonging to the militant group Hezbollah exploded in Lebanon on Tuesday, killing at least 14 people and wounding about 2,750.

Some Hezbollah pagers also exploded in Syria, injuring others. Lebanon, Hezbollah, and their allies have blamed Israel.

Many analysts believe the answer lies in how Hezbollah got hold of the pagers in the first place, as that could provide clues as to whether the devices were tampered with to enable the explosion.

Al Jazeera has tracked the pager supply chain from Taiwan to Hungary to Lebanon, including a three-month stay in port where the devices may have been fitted with explosives.
