Muslims are being offered free tattoo removal in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, during the holy month of Ramadan. Islamic charity organization Amil Zakat National Agency organized the program.
Through this, Muslims who follow the religious rules are being given an opportunity to 'repent' during the holy month of Ramadan.
Hundreds of Indonesians have registered for tattoo removal in the program. One of whom is Bima Abdul Soleh (32).
The convener of the program, Raja Zamzami, said, 'Ramadan is the right time for such an event. Removing a tattoo is like worshiping Allah. These people want to repent. For this, they want to eliminate past mistakes and lifestyle.
Tattooing on the body is forbidden (haram) according to Islamic law. Because, it is considered as body deformity. Many of Indonesia's 220 million Muslims are Sunni. They practice Islam liberally. But tattoos are still considered negative there.
Bima was preparing for prayers after removing the tattoo from his body. He said, 'At one stage I thought, what will happen by using these? There is no end to it. For this I have decided to remove it.
Neela Novian, 24, came to remove the tattoo like Bima. He had a small tattoo on his hand. He said he removed the tattoo "to avoid negative criticism". Source: Agencies
