Sudha Murthy, Rishi Sunak's mother-in-law, appointed to Indian parliament


Educationist and writer Sudha Murthy has been nominated as an MP in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India. 


She is the wife of Indian billionaire businessman and founder of information technology firm Infosys NR Narayan Murthy and mother-in-law of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.


Draupadi Murmu, the President of India, nominated Sudha Murthy as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament on Women's Day on Friday (March 8). Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has greeted Sudha Murthy. 


In a message, he said, the presence of Sudha Murthy in the upper house of Parliament is a strong step in our 'women power'. Congratulations on his tenure as MP.


Sudha was born on August 19, 1950 in Karnataka. Narayan Murthy's wife started her career in Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company. 


Sudha has also worked as a teacher in a university in Bangalore. He has more than 40 books in various languages including Kannada, Marathi, English. He also wrote columns in different newspapers at different times.


Sudha Murthy said after getting the news of being nominated as Rajya Sabha member, 'I got a bigger platform to work. I am very happy.' Two children of Narayan Murthy and Sudha. Rohan and Akshata. Akshata's husband Rishi Sunak is the British Prime Minister.


There were many speculations about Sudha Murthy joining politics earlier. He was once asked a question about this - after being successful in so many roles, can he be seen in politics? His reply was, I am happy with the role I am currently in. I am happy as I am.


A few days ago, Sudha Murthy was seen going to New Parliament Building in New Delhi. Since then there have been various speculations. However, his reply was that he came only to see the parliament building.

 

Sudha said, the new parliament building is very beautiful. Cannot be expressed in language. I wanted to come here for a long time. I wanted to visit. It's like a dream come true. India's culture, art, history, are beautifully portrayed here. All very nice.


However, after hearing the praise of Modi and the new parliament building in his mouth, buzz started, whether Sudha Murthy is going to get the parliamentary ticket from the ruling party this year. But all speculations ended on Friday with President Draupadi Murmu's announcement.


Recently Sudha Murthy is associated with social service activities. She founded Infosys Foundation in 1996. He is also a member of the Gates Foundation. 


She opened several orphanages in Karnataka. Besides, he is associated with many developmental activities in the villages of this state.


For her social work Sudha Murthy was awarded the Padma Shri in 2006. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2023 by the Modi government.
