Myanmar Junta Sentenced Three Generals To Death For Surrendering Town

Three Myanmar army officers have been sentenced to death for surrendering to rebel groups and relinquishing control of the city.

They were recently sentenced to death by a junta government court for relinquishing control of a strategically important city on the Chinese border. AFP reported this news citing military sources.

Almost three years after taking power through a military coup, the junta troops have recently faced fierce resistance from ethnic rebel groups.

Junta forces have lost control of many areas, military bases and cities due to heavy attacks by the rebels. Among them, the rebels took control of an important city on the Chinese border called Laukkai last month.

According to reports, the junta forces were forced to relinquish control of Laukkai town in Shan state in the face of repeated attacks by the rebels. In addition, hundreds of soldiers surrendered to the fighters of the rebel alliance Three Brotherhood Alliance.

The coalition of rebels launched a coordinated campaign against the junta forces in October last year. After that, the group occupied a large area of the country.

But the surrender of hundreds of soldiers is considered the biggest defeat for Myanmar's military in decades. However, after the surrender, the army commander and soldiers in charge of the city were released.

Army officers were executed within a month of this disastrous incident. According to an AFP report, an army source said on condition of anonymity that three army officers of the rank of brigadier general were sentenced to death.

Among them is the commander of the lost city of Laukkai. Besides, another army source confirmed the death sentence.

However, the sources did not say when, when or in which court this death sentence was given.

AFP reported that an army source said last month that three army officers of the rank of brigadier general had been taken into military custody.

Myanmar's military law makes it a punishable offense to leave a military base without permission from top leadership. It can be punishable by death.

However, a junta spokesman did not receive a response when contacted for comment on the latest execution, AFP reported.
