Storm Ashley to hit parts of UK this weekend

Storm Ashley is the first storm of the season named as wind

Storm Ashley is set to hit the UK this weekend. An amber weather warning has been issued for Scotland on Sunday, accompanied by yellow warnings for Northern Ireland and certain areas of England and Wales.

The UK is bracing for intense winds of up to 80mph as the first named storm of the season approaches. The Met Office has announced an amber weather warning for the north-west of Scotland on Sunday, alongside yellow warnings covering all of Scotland, Northern Ireland, north-west England, and parts of Wales.

The amber warning will be effective from 9am on Sunday until midnight, with an additional yellow warning for the far north of Scotland from midnight to 9am on Monday.

On Saturday morning, the eastern regions of the UK will experience heavy rainfall, followed by intervals of sunshine. Subsequently, some showers are expected to move into the north-west.

According to the Met Office, gusts of up to 80mph may be felt in Scotland on Sunday, posing a "small chance" of life-threatening situations due to flying debris and large coastal waves.

The forecaster also indicated that certain roads and bridges might be closed, leading to potential cancellations of train and flight services, as well as possible damage to infrastructure.

Transport Scotland has cautioned about anticipated disruptions to public transport, including the ferry services across the country.

A statement from Transport Scotland noted: “A windy period is anticipated across the entire UK on Sunday and into Monday, but there is a heightened risk of disruption in parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, north-west England, and north-west Wales.

“Initially, strong south to south-easterly winds are expected to develop through Sunday morning, with gusts of 50-60mph likely in some inland areas, particularly in Northern Ireland and western Scotland, and potentially reaching 60-70mph along exposed coasts and hills.
