Ladakh environmental activist, educationist and Magsaysay award winner Sonam Wangchuk was denied entry into Delhi by the police. They were stopped by the Delhi Police at Singhu border Monday (30 September) night.
Not only that, over a hundred protesters were arrested along with Wangchuk. All of them participated in the Delhi campaign to protect Ladakh's environment and demand other demands.
Aamir Khan's popular movie 'Three Idiots' was made on the life of Sonam Wangchuk. His screen characters were Ranchordas Shyamaldas Chanchod and Phungsukh Wangdu.
Sonam Wangchuk has been agitating for a long time to protect the fragile environment of Ladakh, to form a separate state and to include the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Local people of Sixth Schedule areas can make their own laws to protect land and culture. A few days ago, he went on a hunger strike for this demand. This time he started the Delhi campaign to demand talks with the central leadership.
They started their march from Ladakh on September 1 and reached the plains via Himachal Pradesh.
On Monday they left for Delhi in different vehicles. The purpose was to pay respects to Gandhiji's tomb at Rajghat and hold talks with the central government.
But they were stopped by the police of Delhi and Haryana at Singhu border. The agitating farmers of Punjab-Haryana were also detained here last year.
Sonam Wangchuk claims that the aim of this movement is to fulfill the promise made by the government to the people of Ladakh five years ago.
Before being detained by the Delhi Police, he said on social media that he was being detained along with 150 pedestrians.
He said, 'There are many old people in our team, there are also ex-servicemen. I don't know what fate has in store. We are marching peacefully. We want to visit Bapur's (Gandhiji) tomb. It is the largest democratic country in the world, which is known as the mother of democracy, O Rama.'
