Super Typhoon Yagi makes landfall in China's Hainan province |
Super Typhoon Yagi severely impacted Hainan, an island province in southern China, bringing intense rainfall and strong winds, resulting in at least two fatalities and 92 injuries, as reported by local authorities on Saturday.
The two confirmed deaths occurred in Ding'an County, while Wenchang City recorded 12 injuries and Haikou City reported 80 injuries as of Saturday morning, according to official statistics.
As the winds and rainfall diminished, Hainan downgraded its typhoon alert and commenced rapid recovery efforts throughout the province.
More than 2,200 personnel have been deployed to restore electricity to over 1.5 million households affected by the storm. By 7 a.m. on Saturday, more than 20% of these households had been reconnected to the power grid.
Efforts to repair roads are also in progress, with 51 out of 89 blocked main roads now cleared.
High-speed rail services around the island are anticipated to resume on Saturday afternoon, while ferry services in the Qiongzhou Strait are expected to restart by Sunday evening.
Haikou Meilan International Airport will remain temporarily closed until noon on Sunday due to the lingering effects of Typhoon Yagi, whereas Sanya Phoenix International Airport in the popular tourist destination of Sanya began gradually resuming flight operations at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
In addition, rescue teams are working diligently to restore communication services, as over 12,500 base stations were damaged throughout the province, with Wenchang City experiencing the most significant disruption to its communication infrastructure.
Super Typhoon Yagi, the 11th typhoon of the year, made landfall twice in China on Friday, first affecting Hainan and subsequently Guangdong Province.
