5.3 magnitude earthquake strikes Taiwan's east coast |
A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck the sparsely populated east coast county of Hualien on Saturday, according to Taiwan's Meteorological Bureau.
No immediate damage has been reported. The quake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei. The bureau said the quake was 17 kilometers deep.
Taiwan sits near the boundary between two plates and is prone to earthquakes. In April, Hualien was hit by Taiwan's worst earthquake in at least 25 years.
Nine people were killed, more than 900 were injured and thousands of aftershocks followed. An earthquake struck the south of the country, killing more than 100 people.
