Hollywood actor Cillian Murphy has won his first Academy Award for his portrayal of a physicist in the film'Oppenheimer'.
The triumph rounds out a great awards season for the 47-year-old Irish actor, who also received a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Screen Actors Guild award for his portrayal. This was his first Oscar nomination.
Murphy, who resides in Ireland and has a quiet profile in Hollywood, landed his greatest role to date as a troubled, morally conflicted Oppenheimer.
He has also played leading roles in films such as '28 Days Later' and the crime drama 'Peaky Blinders,' as well as appearances in Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" Batman trilogy and 'Inception'.
For a plot based on sophisticated science, Murphy said in July that he "didn't really waste too much time on the physics," instead focusing on "the humanity and the emotion, and the complexity and the morality of the character."
The film 'Oppenheimer' leads this year's Oscar nominations and has won several other accolades, including the Golden Globe.
The film, which, together with Greta Gerwig's "Barbie," spawned the summer cinema sensation known as "Barbenheimer," helped support a 2023 box office where well-established franchises failed.
