Backchannel Talks Collapse as Iran Rejects All U.S. Demands

Back door negotiations between Iran and the United States have completely collapsed, with Tehran refusing to accept any of Washington’s key demands, the New York Times reported, citing informed officials.

‎According to the report, months of quiet diplomatic contacts aimed at easing tensions over Iran’s nuclear program, regional security, and sanctions relief have failed to produce any breakthrough. Iranian officials have made it clear that they are unwilling to compromise on core issues, including limits on uranium enrichment and changes to Iran’s regional policies.

‎U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the New York Times that Washington had hoped informal talks could prevent further escalation and open the door to a broader agreement. Instead, negotiators now describe the process as being at a “complete dead end,” with no clear path forward.

‎The collapse of these backchannel talks comes at a sensitive moment, as tensions between the two countries have intensified in recent weeks. President Donald Trump has recently warned Iran of severe consequences if it refuses to engage with the United States, while Tehran has responded by insisting it will not negotiate under pressure or threats.

‎Analysts warn that the failure of quiet diplomacy increases the risk of further confrontation, both politically and militarily, and reduces the chances of reviving any form of nuclear deal in the near future.

‎With no negotiations currently underway and both sides hardening their positions, prospects for de-escalation between Washington and Tehran appear increasingly uncertain.
